The Top Down ~ Bottom Up Approach of Yoga Therapy

The image below, supports my vision and experience in working one on one with clients to bring an  individualised, person- centered approach to living with, moving through or growing from health concerns that affect your wellbeing.

Rather than focusing on the problem area and looking for solutions, this bringing together of therapeutic modalities within my scope of practice allows for a top down (mind) bottom up (body) approach.

For example; someone coming to see me for chronic low back pain initiating from an injury years before, may be holding tension through the whole body generated by fear of creating more pain. They may also be completely unaware of the tension as it has become habitual…a part of them. Just treating the body or low back is not enough, just encouraging relaxation through massage or movement is not enough. And even bringing together gentle yet specific somatic movement to relax tension, whilst encouraging a slower breath practice to bring them into a more ventral vagal (calmer sense of being) may be wonderful at the time, and may become one of the strategies for lasting change, but we are more than the body.

By integrating top down and bottom up approaches, there lies opportunity for integration.

I may begin observing, your posture, gait and breathing. I may listen to your language, the words and phrases you use habitually, how you speak about yourself, others, your concerns, your goals. What brings you joy and what holds you back. Your commitments, your relationships with self and others, and your goals defined short term and long. I my offer some learnings around nervous system regulation, yogic philosophy, relevant enneagram understandings (personality) to support you to better understand yourself.

There may be movement – firstly slow and gentle to bring a sense of interoceptive awareness around sensations you experience, and breath awareness practice so you build this understanding of the subtle shifts within to begin building a deeper relationship with the self, and the capacity to notice, explore and respond, so together we can co-create a plan that fits your lifestyle, that is sustainable, that is adaptable.

As a yoga therapist I work within my scope of practice and do not diagnose or prescribe, I don’t analyse your x-rays or blood tests. That is left to those specialists in their specialised fields. I can support you as you work with existing practitioners, alongside or in some cases as a follow on.

Ultimately the aim is not for you to be dependent on me, but to become independently empowered in your journey.

The three session package here is the introduction phase. Ongoing, consistent practice is what brings about change and a free phone consultation to discuss this is on offer.
