What is Yoga Therapy?

“Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the philosophy and practice of yoga”
The International Association of Yoga Therapists

Simply put Yoga Therapy is a way of working collaboratively with your therapist to provide an individualised care program to address physical, mental or emotional needs at this time.  As your therapist, I will guide you in using some or all of the yogic tools listed below to unlock and develop your own inner resources to help you on your way to improved health and wellbeing.

  • Yoga postures (Asanas)
  • Breathing techniques (Pranayama)
  • Meditation and visualisation techniques
  • Yoga philosophy – looking at how the mind-body effect one another
  • Techniques such as hand positions (Mudras) and Sound techniques (Mantras) may also be offered
There is no ‘one size fits all’ in Yoga Therapy.

Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and can help improve our overall health and wellbeing, yoga therapy is specific to the individual. From the first consultation, we explore a variety of practices to develop a home practice for you to work with, specifically tailored to your needs, and designed to support your body’s innate healing potential…. whilst working with other modalities you may be using.

What does Yoga Therapy do?

Broadly put, Yoga Therapy can be effective in managing healthy aging, depression and anxiety, chronic pain, major illness and trauma and the benefits. The benefits to you can range from:
  • Increased autonomy over management of your symptoms, including physical, emotional, and psychological.
  • Increased awareness of posture and its effect on your health
  • Enhanced body awareness and body acceptance
  • Learning yoga, meditation, and mindfulness skills to balance your nervous system
  • Increased awareness of behaviours and thoughts that may be holding you back.
  • Experiencing new feelings of wellbeing, compassion, and contentment
  • Increase in strength, stamina, and range of motion to support your recovery

How does it work?

Yoga Therapy can be one-on-one with initial consultation including assessment followed by a series of visits depending on the goal/s and progress.

A group Yoga Therapy class where a common theme is explored, such as strengthening the back, increasing stability and balance, or breathing for anxiety. However, in the Yoga Therapy class, each client will practice according to their specific needs and goals.

Please note: Yoga Therapy does not have to replace therapies or other medical intervention you may be using. It can compliment.
